Metaphysics - an introduction
“If someone wishes for good health, one must first ask oneself if he is ready to do away with the reasons for his illness. Only then is it possible to help him.” – Hippocrates
And I would add to that as a really first question, do you really want to live and are
you willing to do all that is needed to create your optimal health and well-being.
Search the internet and you will find many definitions for the word “metaphysics!”
But here I want to
Keep it simple
Relate it primarily to health and well-being, life and living
So bear with! Please!
When is a cigar, not a cigar, asked Freud!
For those who think a physical medical symptom is simply that, a physical thing, a wart on
your nose or a disease such as diabetes, then I am going to ask you to think again; this page
may radically challenge your beliefs.
So be as open-minded as you can be!
Fields of Interest in Metaphysics
In our everyday world, the word metaphysics encompasses many fields of interest and may be in any one or a combination of the following subjects: Spirituality, Mysticism, Awakening, Life after Death, the Soul, Reincarnation, Meditation, Yoga, Extra-Sensory Perception, Dreams, Jungian Psychology, Parapsychology, Astrology, Self-Help Studies, Positive Thinking, Near-Death Experiences, to name the most popular.
In this website it is related to health and well-being, life and living.
Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes some 20 years ago, and subsequently other health issues, some related, some perhaps not, I have been fascinated by exploring the deeper meaning behind medical conditions, to the extent I studied for a Masters Doctorate in Metaphysics.
If the body’s natural state and constant drive was to be in balance ie healthy, what caused it to go out of balance, unhealthy? Why?
I wasn’t convinced we just “caught” something. Everything from a facial spot to a deadly disease had to have a cause. We didn’t get things just because we were unlucky.
Conventional medicine, the medicine you get from your doctor, didn’t have the answers, in fact in all my time going to doctors it is always just about treating the signs and symptoms. And that simply has never worked. That is not about health. That is about symptom and disease management and a certain route to possible death.
Beyond the blue horizon!
Meta - I needed to look “beyond” – to the cause – and “meta” is Greek for beyond.
Physical - The word physical is easy to understand with regard to most aspects of health – we can see there is something not right, we can sense when we physically feel unwell, an illness like diabetes has so many physical signs and symptoms – thirst, neuropathic pain, weight gain, changeable glucose counts which can be physically tracked, and so on.
But what causes our ill-nesses and dis-eases?
Metaphysics seeks to explore “beyond” the obvious physical symptom to get to the cause, the root, the trigger.
Now I know some savants of metaphysics will have deeper, more complicated definitions but as I said above, let’s keep this simple.
Here are some definitions I have found. Metaphysics can be said to be –
The philosophy and study of reality beyond the physical ie what is the reality beyond your ill-health
The part of philosophy that is concerned with the basic causes and nature of things
A philosophy that maintains we live in a Spiritual Universe, that we are energy beings, that we are spirit beings having a physical existence on earth, and that our world is mentally caused ie our thoughts create our reality. Knowing this truth is the key to your happiness.
An age old method of changing the circumstances of our lives for the better by changing the way we think, speak and act
A method that brings us into alignment with what we want in life instead of what we don’t want; ie it I a method so we have to use it – it doesn’t just happen
A way of expanding our view of reality and gaining knowledge that will empower us to awaken the true potential we all have within us
A new way of looking at the world that allows us to release our limitations, worry and fear, and draw to us better life circumstances.
In short, and ttraditionally, metaphysics attempts to answer three basic questions in the broadest possible terms:-
Ultimately, what is there? Ah I see a rash, I feel depressed, I am in pain etc
What is it like? How do I experience this? Since when? Where do I experience it? When? What am I doing when this occurs?
What or who has caused this? How was I behaving?
Therefore, metaphysically, when we consider an illness or disease, we
seek to find out what is there, what is it like (to experience – a
question no doctor has ever asked me about any condition) and in
looking for a cause to go beyond the most basic of symptoms and
causes, ie beyond the physical.
Metaphysical causes of disease can help you understand more about
the reasons behindthe ailments that you are suffering from. When
you know the cause you can eliminate the cause, as far as possible,
instead of just continuing to live with a symptom and named- illness,
managing and palliating its side effects.
Metaphysics goes beyond the concept of just your (gross) body and
deals with the subtle body involving psycho-spiritual constituents.
We are not just our physical body.
Thus, by exploring the metaphysical meaning of illness and disease,
you can apply a holistic approach involving the mind, body and soul
to help cure an underlying cause to your disease and do this in
conjunction with the treatment suggested by a qualified medical
practitioner, not necessarily instead of. That said, sometimes one
has to deal with conflicts of interest and philosophy.
Examples will be given throughout this website, and you will find more detail explanation
under certain health conditions listed eg adrenal fatigue, cancers, depression, diabetes, and so on.
Metaphysics is not some new-age fad as some would like to insist. It is hugely logical and practical and is based in time worn ideas of how the Universe works and about its natural Laws. Understanding that will help you change the way you think, thereby changing the outer circumstances of your life. Using Metaphysical Principles can be truly life-changing and once learned, the techniques can be applied throughout your life on any problem at all.
Mentioning some Laws of the Universe you may wish to explore these:-
By now you will have picked up that metaphysics involves exploring what you think, how you think, and how your thinking affects the outcomes in your life. If you always think the world is negative and people are out to get you, then that belief, that primal thought, will draw to you people and experiences that are negative, out to get you, and then you can prove your point. But that is not how the world is. It is how you have created your world.
Whatever you think on a daily basis materialises as your experience, as your life. Here and now , this very moment, you are creating your own future, in accordance with what you think moment by moment.
Everything that is created in your life at some level is the direct expression of some belief in your own mind. The home you live in, the work you do, the people you meet and the amount of weight you carry, everything in your life is a direct product of what you are thinking and believing. If you keep telling yourself and your friends, “Oh I can never seem to lose any weight” then guess what, you don’t lose any weight. Tell them that money goes out as quick as it comes in, then another guess what! But what would happen if you said instead, “Stop! I am finding it easy to lose weight. I eat healthily and exercise well. I spend money wisely. I save money!”
Your beliefs, which is just another word for “thoughts” determine the way you think and your thoughts are a form of energy that transmits out into the Universe like a magnet, attracting back to you it’s exact likeness. Accept that your thoughts are a magnet and whatever you are thinking, you are magnetising to you. Learning how this works and having the tools to make the changes can help you to let go of pain, problems, negative relationships and hardships of all kinds.
Using Metaphysics You Can Heal Your Life. Read “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise L Hay!
Use Metaphysical Principles for
Improving health and well-being
Healing relationships with self and others
Getting more of what you want out of life instead of what you don’t want
Change any area of your life you aren’t happy about
Causes of dis-ease, illness, medical conditions
Metaphysical healing is based on the belief that negative mental patterns, left unchecked, can eventually result in physical disease or illness; and that the reversing of those negative mental patterns into positive patterns can in turn lead to healing.
Though western medicine often dismisses the notion of metaphysical healing, there is little doubt about the connection between mind and body and how our thinking affects our health. Doctors routinely tell patients to keep spirits high while supporting visits from family and friends, understanding that anything that makes a patient feel better mentally and emotionally, aids healing. But often that’s as far as they can take it.
According to those who believe in Metaphysical healing, certain common negative thinking habits affect particular areas of the body.
For example, worry about money issues tends to manifest as lower back problems, as the back represents support. A believer in metaphysical healing who was experiencing soreness in his lower back would examine his thought process to see if he had been over-anxious about money issues of late. Once the negative thinking pattern was identified and replaced with a new regular, and more positive pattern, the backaches, if caused by the old negative pattern, should subside.
The idea behind metaphysical healing is that the individual is his or her own healer, responsible for creating both health and illness. When an individual becomes ill, the person believing in metaphysics does not think it was by chance, but by mental patterns that can be identified and replaced. The type and point of origin of the ailment gives a clue where to look in the thinking patterns.
According to this belief, the most compromising emotions to health are longstanding guilt, resentment, lack of forgiveness, and anger. The biggest healers are self-love, self-acceptance, and self-worth, forgiveness, compassion and kindness.
Louise L Hay
Arguably the best-known modern proponent of metaphysical healing is Louise Hay with
whom I trained as one of her teachers many years ago.
Her books have sold tens of millions of copies, translated into 29 different languages over
35 countries. She began teaching metaphysics in the 1970's.
Louise is renowned for putting her positive beliefs and techniques to the test when she was
diagnosed with vaginal cancer, and subsequently claimed to heal herself.
So is this an alternative to comventional medicine?
Absolutely not! If you have been in an accident and broken a limb, western medicine can
work wonders. If you have returned from a war torn region and suffer many physical injuries,
western medicine hasa strong part to play.
But your own mental response to your conditions will also help and are crucial to recovery.
Most who are proponents for metaphysical healing do not believe in shunning western
medicine, but do believe that illness, not necessarily accident, is a by-product of an
unhealthy mental pattern, and if the by-product is simply removed by doctors but the
causation remains, the illness will return. Therefore, those who believe in this choose to
take responsibility for their well-being as much as possible.
I had a relative who was diagnosed with ling cancer. Western medicine did her lots of good
(and bad – especially the side effect of chemotherapy and other drugs) but behind the scenes,
although she said she was approaching her treatment metaphysically, she found it tough to sustain
(the diagnosis came rather late) and in her private moments, would revert to her previous ways.
Metaphysical healing has been practised in one form or another throughout history. Shamanic practices relied heavily on the patient believing the shaman had the power to throw out illness. Believing so, once a ritual was performed, the patient was often healed.
Ultimate Truth, God, or Awakening
So, if you are struggling with ill-health, is it time for a change in attitude, in belief, in thinking? Part of our healing, if not most of it, will involve our individual search for and discovery of Ultimate Truth, God – not in any religious sense but in the sense of a Higher Power which some others may call Spirit, Source, Nature, Love. Healing happens when we are open to an Awakening within the centre of our human mind, heart, or inner self, when we are willing to throw off the negative thinking that keeps us enslaved. It happens when we are open to the awakening of life-improving potentials in the individual person and society collectively. If what you’re doing, your way, isn’t working, isn’t it time for a change?
The Healing Path of Truth
Exploring our metaphysical beliefs helps us find purpose and meaning in our lives; meaning happens when we find our gifts in life, and our purpose is extending those gifts out to the world. Many ask, “Why am I here?” but are expecting answers in terms of a job. That will not work. Metaphysics helps us find purpose in our human existence, searching for a balanced interpretation and explanation of how things really are and what we are. Metaphysics is ultimately, in beyond the physical, seeing and experiencing that whilst we live on earth, we are connected to a higher Truth, a higher Consciousness.
But it begins here on earth by being open and honest ie truthful about our own part, in our thinking, that creates ill-health and ill-being. You cannot replace what you are unwilling to face.
Metaphysics is not only the pursuit of Truth; it also offers service to the greater good of humankind.
Metaphysics and YOU!
Throughout this site, especially on pages around specific health conditions, you will be invited to consider or at least notice the possible metaphysical causes of the condition. Some may refer to them as mental / emotional causes, or the spiritual meaning of illness, here we shall refer to it as "metaphysical" or "beyond the physical."
