Mystery Illnesses

Mystery creates wonder

and wonder is the basis of man's desire to understand.

Neil Armstrong, Astronaut

Have you run the gamut of all that conventional medicine has to offer and found you are

no further forward to bettering your health, that you continue to find no answers to your

health symptoms and conditions?

You know those mysterious symptoms? The ones that you try to talk to your doctor about,

but instead of getting an answer you get a proverbial "You are just getting older." ...or

"You are just depressed." ... or "It's no big deal, everyone has these types of problems." or

even , "I have those symptoms too," and that from your doctor.

Your intuition tells you that the symptoms are a problem, and should be investigated, but

no one is willing to investigate. Well often , those "symptoms" are a major warning that your

body is trying to send you, a warning bell that autoimmune disease is coming (or has already

arrived).

There is only so much conventional medicine can do; it can only offer what lies within the

remits of its paradigm.

Think of a box that someone offers as a gift. You can only admire, use, worship what is in

that box. If you were hoping for chocolates, a book on Angels, and some cologne, then you

will be hugely disappointed if, on opening the box, instead, all you get are tins of chopped,

processed meat and a few designer tea-bags.

A doctor cannot give you that in which he has not been trained! Most doctors get on average about two hours on nutrition over five years so are hardly best placed to talk of the importance of nutrition to health.

In my own case, as mounting medical conditions led into multiple morbidity, and three years of consultation after consultation led to no conclusion, no help, and the tiresome mantra, “you’re old, get used to it”, I had to face the fact that conventional medicine was never going to help. I wanted to get to the root of my conditions, and why so many appeared in such a short time space, but the reality is our NHS is not set up for such a process; it focusses on symptoms and does so in the timescale of ten minutes.

I’m just returned from yet another futile visit to my general practitioner (GP) – this after three years of regular consultations in the NHS for various “symptoms” only to be told there is nothing we can do. I had a doctor tell me, May 2018, that my blood results were “normal” nothing more could be done. “ Today I gave a list of some 15 symptoms and conditions (which have been accruing over three years but are regularly dismissed by the medical profession) and this is what I got in response from my doctor:-

  • Many of my patients report these symptoms (but no answer as to why so I conclude he has lots of sick people in his clinic)

  • I (the doctor) get these symptoms

  • There’s nothing we can do

  • We know in 30% of the cases what the symptoms mean, in 33% we guess, and 33% we haven’t got a clue

So I asked, “Then why do I still have the conditions” which I had highlighted. He simply did not know. “Why do I constantly have no energy, stamina, motivation, am in constant pain, and so stiff I can hardly move?”  His reply was that most of his patients reported thus, even he had such symptoms and there the conversation ended.

But I am not willing to give in and do nothing or have nothing done; I do accept the NHS cannot give me what in which their doctors have not been trained.

So I am back to where I have been these past three years, resorting to non-conventional medicine, to finding ways through nutrition and spiritual ways, to healing and the creation of health.

A new way

So, on this page I want to encourage you to consider three things

  1. The meaning of mystery illness

  2. That you too may be suffering from, at least living with, a mystery illness

  3. That you could benefit by reading the books of Anthony William, The Medical Medium

Introduction

Some people, who automatically hold doctors in high esteem , at times without question, often surrender to what the doctor is saying, that things are normal, get used to it. Be radical. Let this NOT be you.

Many, however, know something is not right, they cannot be ill for no reason at all.  And they are not willing to just put up with it.

They may have a confusing cluster of symptoms, as I have, or even one or two very severe symptoms that can leave general doctors and even some specialists stumped for answers.

I have met those who have suffered for years searching for a diagnosis that seems to just not exist and which conventional medicine shrugs off and denies. Their quality of life and living is low.

Many are dismissed by puzzled, sometimes disinterested  doctors, flummoxed specialists, and even non-believing friends and family, as time lingers on without any answers and often little hope; with no diagnosis or relief in sight, they start to lose hope of ever returning to their former, healthier selves let alone move forward to optimal health. In frustration or fatigue, they may even begin to experience self-doubt, but in their moments of positive energy, their instincts and their symptoms tell them something is just not right, there has to be a way. And the quest continues.

Why is getting a diagnosis of such mysteries so difficult and time-consuming?

We live in fast-paced, stressful times for which the human body, mind, emotions, and spirit was never made; our genetic make-up has not caught up from the times we were hunter-gatherers. We are trying to live in a modern world with the “software” of ancient times. Medicine has not yet caught up with this concept either. That a lot of our illnesses are that we simply do not have the wherewithal to exist in these high tech times.

Rapid changes in society, misinformation, a lack of awareness, a lack of self-responsibility, a lack of faith all contribute to lack of healing!

The human body is infinitely complex. There is much science and medicine have yet to discover … but disinterest, lack of money, biases often prevent the research.

The current, conventional medical model / paradigm is out of sync with what’s really needed.  Much of traditional medicine is focused on treating symptoms, usually with some kind of pharmaceutical approach, and not finding and fixing the cause of the symptoms.

Many general doctors are not trained in and so don’t ask patients about nutrition, lifestyle and environmental exposures / toxins. They know little specifically about the effects of stress on our bodies, minds and emotions, are ill-trained in mental health, and the present model does not afford them the time to go exploring lifestyle connections, or life circumstances like the effects of death, redundancy, and divorce.

Specialists are trained to look at patients through the lens of individual body systems and not at the person as a whole and therefore whole inter-related picture of their health challenges.

Illness and disease can be caused by a combination of genetics, environmental factors, toxin exposure, personal responsibility, process malfunction in body systems or cells, nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, personality and a person’s knowledge and skill and ability to respond to health issues, and many other factors. Finding the answers to solve a mystery illness can involve peeling away many different layers and following the smallest clues, much like a detective.

Mystery

A mystery is ...

  • something that is difficult or impossible to understand or explain, an unsolved problem, an enigma, a secret

  • a novel, play, or film dealing with a puzzling crime, usually a murder.

  • the secret rites of Greek and Roman pagan religion, or of any ancient or tribal religion, to which only initiates are/were admitted

  • a religious belief based on divine revelation, especially one regarded as beyond human understanding.

What is a mystery illness or disease?

If we look at the definitions for mystery, then for me there are some clues that often we disregard the spiritual meaning of illness, or deny the power of Divine revelation,  Divine intervention, in our medical condition.

I have often read that all illness / disease has a spiritual meaning; but not all accept this and to most this concept is in itself a mystery.

But what in everyday speak do we mean by a mystery illness, condition, or disease?

Enter Anthony William, The Medical Medium.

Anthony was the first person to introduce me to the notion of mystery illness, the secrets behind chronic and mystery illness and how to finally heal.

Anthony has helped tens of thousands of people to heal from ailments that have been misdiagnosed, or ineffectively treated, or that doctor’s can’t resolve. He has done this by listening to Spirit, a divine voice that literally speaks into his ear, telling him what lies at the root of people’s pain or illness and what they need to do to restore health.

For some of you this may be a bit woo woo; but bear with! Don’t knock it till you try it. Try it and you won’t knock it!

A mystery illness / condition is not just an unidentified disease. Labels limit and no more so than here – to limit the definition of mystery illness to rare, and acute disease does not help. A mystery illness can be any ailment that leaves anyone, not just a doctor, perplexed or a situation unresolved and seemingly unresolvable. It can be:-

  • A mystery because the symptom has no name or there is no name for a given cluster of symptoms

  • A mystery can be an established, chronic condition for which there is no effective treatment

  • A mystery because the cause is unknown and so there is no effective treatment for the cause

  • A mystery because it is a condition that is constantly misdiagnosed by medical professionals

  • A mystery because although a name of the condition exists, it is only a label eg diabetes, and there is no meaning behind it. Ask yourself, where in the body can you point to diabetes?

  • A mystery because medical science hasn’t yet worked out why people are in their present condition eg an autoimmune condition

  • A mystery illness is any where a doctor says, “You have X but we don’t really know what it is or why!”

Examples of mystery illness which fall in some or all of the above categories include, but are not restricted to,

  • ADHD

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Bell’s Palsy

  • Candida

  • Celiac disease

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Colitis

  • Depression

  • Diabetes Type 2

  • Epstein Barr Virus

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

  • Hypoglycaemia

Even with some of the above, there are charities and medical theories to support specific conditions; but the understanding of the condition is still very much in the dark ages.

According to Anthony William, mystery illnesses fall into three main categories :-

  • Unnamed illnesses (as yet)

  • Named illness where there are no effective treatments

  • Illnesses which are wrongly diagnosed eg any time now I present with a new symptom I am told it is down to my diabetes or age. Truth is, the doctor simply does not know.

Mystery illnesses are at an all time high – consider why there is an epidemic of diabetes, of obesity, and still of cancers that are not understood. Is it all down to sugar and bad luck?

So, if you are living with  a mystery condition, here are some things I recommend based on my own experience (in some parts of your country, facilities may be limited eg in Scotland at my last count (June 2018) there were only 4 independent Functional Medicine Doctors in Scotland)

  1. Seek out a trained functional medicine doctor. Do on line researches as well as use this link

  2. Inform yourself about mystery illnesses in general – listen to these podcasts

  3. Inform yourself, through various sources, on your specific condition ie do not just accept what a national charity tells you. Very often they are wedded to the conventional medical paradigm; try starting with the resources on this site

  4. Consider lifestyle changes – in behaviour, in movement, in nutrition, in spiritual practice

  5. Consider the spiritual meaning of your condition   - link one   link two

  6. Read up on metaphysics – the mental / emotional connection and spiritual meaning of illness -

  7. Ask your body - what is this condition trying to teach me and pay attention to the first thoughts that enter your awareness.
